A unique random note generator born on the 1978 Synclavier I — now reborn for NI Kontakt.
In 1991, Root-Sounds founder Stefan Schramm completed a groundbreaking project on the first-generation NEDC Synclavier. He developed a method to sync a random note sequence running on the Synclavier to MIDI, using a combination of hardware and custom code.
Years later, the core algorithm was completely overhauled and transformed into something larger: a powerful virtual instrument capable of adding customizable randomness to almost any musical piece.
Synclavier Newage uses Native Instruments’ KSP scripting inside Kontakt to emulate the same note-switching logic as the original system. From thousands of samples, 720 were handpicked for quality and musicality.
35 years after its original concept, this modern emulation pays tribute to a forgotten innovation — and brings it to today’s DAWs with precision and flair.
Just load it into Kontakt, hit Play, and you’ll be greeted with an inspiring, generative underscore. Then tweak pitch selection, note range, density, FM modulation, volume, panning, and more — adding an organic, algorithmic edge to your music.
